Bushfires rank amongst the most destructive of all natural disasters to have occurred in Australia; they have been responsible for over 850 deaths since the 19th century and an insurance bill in excess of $1 billion since the late 1960s. Although bushfires occur throughout Australia, the greatest danger occurs in the southeastern states, which rank amongst the most fire-hazardous zones in the world.
